LIFE Project - Salamandra atra

Zoom

In 2004 the European Community approved the LIFE Project "Aurora System - Active Conservation of Salamandra atra aurorae and Other Amphibians", and Parco Natura Viva is one of the partners involved.

This projects aims at building a long-term active system, shared by the local populations (Alps and pre-Alps area), to preserve 4 amphibian species typical of the eastern Alps: Salamandra atra aurorae, Triturus carnifex, Bombina variegata, and Rana latastei.

The main threats to the survival of these amphibians include dramatic environmental changes, in part due to the intense exploitation of natural resources, and poor knowledge and awareness among specialists and the general public.

Thanks to the Park's cooperation, the programme will follow a combined conservation approach (ex situ and in situ). Parco Natura Viva will take part in the development of an information plan and a research plan aimed at assessing possible actual repopulation and reintroduction options.

The project includes the establishment of a strict protection area for Salamandra atra aurorae and the recovery of areas and habitats inhabited by this species.
