Griffon reintroduction in Italy
Parco Natura Viva takes part in a repopulation project to bring the griffon vulture back on the eastern Alps.
The Griffon Project in Italy is an opportunity to rethink and discuss the management strategies of national forests and protected areas, and it recently became an EAZA project with the participation of eastern European zoos interested in supporting the particularly vulnerable Adriatic griffon population.
The first Italian meeting on this species was held at Parco Natura Viva in 2003 with the participation of all people involved in national research projects, and following this meeting the first report on the results of reintroduction projects in Italy was published.
The Park also took part in the griffon reintroduction project in Friuli, when on September 4th, 2003 we freed Icara, a female griffon born at Parco Natura Viva.
